Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport: the megaproject redefining aviation in southeastern China

China continues expanding its aviation infrastructure with projects of enormous scale, and one of the most ambitious is the Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport, a next-generation facility that will become the new international hub for the city of Xiamen in Fujian Province. Designed to handle tens of millions of passengers and the world’s largest aircraft, this airport is set to transform connectivity in southeastern China and strengthen Xiamen’s position as a key center for trade and tourism in Asia.

An airport built for the future

The Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport is being built on Dadeng Island in the Xiang’an District and is part of China’s broader national airport development strategy. The complex will cover roughly 50 square kilometers, including runways, terminals, aprons and logistics facilities.

The project also stands out for its 4F classification, the highest category in international civil aviation standards. This means it will be capable of accommodating very large aircraft such as the Airbus A380, Boeing 777-9 and Boeing 747-8.

Another remarkable aspect of the project is that part of the airport is being constructed on reclaimed land from the sea, a solution increasingly used in major Asian infrastructure projects where urban space is limited.

Massive capacity and phased expansion

The new airport will be developed in multiple stages. In its first phase, it will include:

  • Two main runways of 3,800 and 3,600 meters
  • A terminal building of approximately 550,000 square meters
  • Around 200 aircraft stands
  • An initial capacity of 45 million passengers per year
  • Handling capacity of 750,000 tons of cargo annually

However, the master plan is even more ambitious. Future expansions envision up to four runways and three terminals, allowing the airport to handle 75 to 85 million passengers annually by 2040, placing it among the largest airports in Asia.

A new international hub for the Taiwan Strait region

The new airport will gradually replace the current Xiamen Gaoqi International Airport, which is approaching its operational limits, while positioning itself as a strategic transportation hub in the Taiwan Strait region.

Authorities envision it not only as a passenger hub but also as a major logistics and cargo center, improving regional connectivity between several cities in southern Fujian.

The project also includes major supporting infrastructure such as new highways, metro lines and intercity rail connections that will link the airport with downtown Xiamen and nearby urban areas.

Next-generation technology and design

The airport’s architecture features a modern design with a central building and multiple concourses optimized to manage large passenger flows.

The project also incorporates advanced airport logistics systems, automation technologies and efficient internal transport solutions aimed at improving both passenger experience and airline operations.

Thanks to its size and operational capacity, the airport will be able to handle large volumes of international flights and cargo operations simultaneously, strengthening Xiamen’s role in air routes across the Pacific and Southeast Asia.

Planned opening and role in China’s aviation network

According to current plans, the airport is expected to begin operations around 2026, once flight testing and system calibration are completed. When fully operational, it will be capable of handling approximately 380,000 aircraft movements per year.

Its opening will be essential to relieve congestion at Xiamen’s current airport and to support the economic and tourism growth of the region.

A key piece in China’s airport expansion boom

For more than a decade, China has been investing heavily in aviation infrastructure, building new airports and expanding existing ones to accommodate rapidly growing air traffic.

In this context, Xiamen Xiang’an International Airport stands out as one of the most emblematic projects of this strategy: an airport designed from scratch for the needs of the 21st century, capable of receiving the world’s largest aircraft and handling tens of millions of travelers every year.

Once fully operational, this new hub will not only redefine air transport in Fujian but also reinforce China’s role as one of the most important aviation centers in the world.
